Grado Background
About Grado Grado was founded in 1953 by audio legend Joseph Grado, inventor of the stereo moving coil phono cartridge. Today Grado makes world-renowned hand-built headphones and phono cartridges. This three generation family-owned company still operates out of its original Brooklyn location, led by owner John Grado, who’s joined by sons Jonathan, VP of Marketing, and Matthew, VP of Operations. The company has been called “the finest electricity-to-sound transducer in the world,” and sound remains the company’s top priority.
Grado Labs is a Brooklyn based company that hand assembles headphones and cartridges. Family run since 1953, Grado has seen three generations: Joseph, John, and Jonathan Grado. As Ars Technica says, ” ..on a quiet street in south Brooklyn .”, Grado assembles “. …some of the most renowned headphones.. .it’s just the Grados in their narrow townhouse [assembling] the little-known, well-loved line of headphones.”
Through a well-heard history and deep roots in Brooklyn, the Grado family has had an unrelenting focus on audio quality. For three
generations, tradition and heritage have been carried down with the philosophy that sound comes first.
